True Stories of Champions Who Never Gave Up
First-person stories of real athletes — told by the champions themselves — for every child who has ever stood at a starting line and wondered: "Do I have what it takes?"
For readers aged 7–10
The stories in this book are based on documented, publicly available historical facts about real athletes. All events, dates, statistics, and biographical details have been carefully researched and verified for accuracy. The first-person narrative voice is a creative storytelling device and does not represent actual statements made by the individuals portrayed.
WHEN I PLAYED MY HEART OUT is designed to do three things simultaneously:
- Inspire children through authentic, fact-based stories of real sporting legends
- Educate children about perseverance, mental health, identity, racial justice, and the value of effort
- Activate children through age-appropriate, step-by-step action sections at the end of every story.
A Word About the First-Person VoiceThe stories in this book use a creative first-person narrative device — each champion tells their own story. All biographical facts, dates, statistics, and events have been thoroughly researched and verified. The narrative voice, emotional reflection, and direct address to the reader are literary interpretations designed to bring history to life for young readers, and do not represent actual statements made by the individuals portrayed.
