Probable second edition (per 1860 date upon title page versus 1859 specified upon copyright page). i-xvi, 17-706, [6] pages. Hardcover; H 20.25cm x L 13.5cm. Original dark brown cloth with stamped decoration to boards, soiling and light staining to boards, spine cloth soiled and heavily darkened with gilt stamped plant decoration and lettering heavily dulled with corners bumped and worn, chipping and fraying at spine ends so that cloth is worn fairly even with top and bottom edges of the text block. Interesting nineteenth century overview of wheat and Indian corn with twenty-two chapter titles as follows: "General View of the Organic World," "Cereals and Grasses," "History of the Wheat Plant," "Origin of the Wheat Plant," "Structure and Composition of the Wheat Grain," "Germination of the Wheat Plant," "Origin and Constituents of Soils," "Nutrition of the Wheat Plant," "Experiments of Salm Horstmarr on the Growth of Plants in Inorganic Artificial Soils; also, Those of Weigmann and Polstorff," "Experiments of Gilbert and Lawes," "Growth of the Wheat Plant," "Botanical Description of the Wheat Plant," "Wheat Regions of the World," "Culture of Wheat," "Exhaustion of Soils," "Management of Soils," "Improvement of Soils," "Description and Classification of Varieties of Wheat," "Wheats in Ohio," "Diseases and Enemies of Wheat," "Animal Parasites Affecting the Wheat Plant," and "History of Corn." Latter chapter preceded by an unpaged title leaf: "History, Culture and Varieties of Indian Corn." Includes Preface, Introduction, Index, tables, and approximately one hundred b/w illustrations as either figures or plates; concludes with six pages of publisher advertisements.
