You've answered the question eleven times - tried, not tried, been accused, ignored, asked for someone who's dead. You've reached out for the answer, and seen your loved one's eyes widen in fear, shock, shame.
You're not to blame - no one could have prepared you for this.
What to Say When They Don't Remember: A Guide to Caring for People with Memory Loss is a quick, easy-to-read companion for those who find themselves in a caregiving role. It provides dementia caregivers with practical phrases and conversation starters that help de-escalate difficult situations, focusing on a simple yet effective technique: acknowledging the person's feelings, reassuring them, then redirecting the conversation. Written in simple, jargon-free language, it helps the reader remember a basic conversational approach that can be used even when the caregiver is frustrated, confused or upset.
What to Say When They Don't Remember provides you with:
An overview of the dementia journey and why memory loss happens
Why asking people what they mean, or insisting they're wrong will only alienate you from the person you want to help
What to say (and not to say) when
They can't remember your name
They don't know who you are
They ask for a deceased loved one
They want to go home
They accuse you of stealing
They refuse to eat, bathe, take their medicine
They become angry or agitated
They're sundowning
They can't remember what year it is, or what day of the week
A one-page coaching guide for the people who visit your loved one (or you) and don't know what to say
Advice on how to explain the situation to children of different ages
Ways to cope with your own guilt, frustration, grief, and exhaustion as a dementia caregiver
Information on how to get professional help when you need it - from doctors to support groups to respite care
A quick reference sheet and a printable cheat sheet to post on your fridge
Caregivers often forget that the person living with dementia still wants to feel safe, reassured, comforted - even when they don't seem to want to listen. What to Say When They Don't Remember helps caregivers find simple ways to reassure, soothe, and redirect. Most importantly, it provides guidance on how to take care of yourself as you handle the day-to-day stresses of dementia care.
Whether you're a spouse, adult child, friend, or professional caregiver, you'll leave this book with new tools for managing difficult conversations. Fewer arguments, more peace of mind, and plenty of practical phrases to help you get started.
