[The Buddha] gave myriad teachings designed to suit our diverse interests and dispositions . The extensive and profound scriptures containing those teachings, called sutras, outline the methods and means to bring happiness to all beings . In Tibet, the Buddhist teachings were compiled to reveal the stages of the entire path to enlightenment in a single book. . ' . I do not claim to have great knowledge or high realization, but remembering the kindness of my teachers, who gave these instructions to me, and with concern for the welfare of all beings, I offer these teachings to you." ~from the Introduction. ~ So begins The Way to Freedom, the Dalai Lama's gentle and profoundly eloquent exposition of the Buddha's teachings and instructions. With unprecedented simplicity and beauty, the Dalai Lama reveals the essence of Tibetan Buddhism to both newcomers and devotees. He discusses the tumultuous history of the Buddha's teachings in Tibet and relates stories from various teachers throughout history. He also offers elegant, straightforward reflections on death, rebirth, karma, the Four Noble Truths, and the cultivation of the bodhisattva ideal and deeds: generosity, ethics, patience, effort, concentration, and wisdom.[20819].…
