The knowledge needed to do this well is usually scattered. Hydraulics sits in one text, water chemistry in another, unit-process design in a third, and the regulations in yet more — often as theory, without the worked, unit-carrying calculations practitioners actually apply. It becomes hard to trace how an assumption made early in the treatment train shapes the units downstream, or to tie each decision to the rules that govern it.
This handbook closes that gap. It follows the path water itself takes: from the character of water and the estimation of demand, through the hydraulics of pipes, pumps, and channels, into each clean-water process in the order it appears in a real treatment train, then through distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, and the management of sludge and residuals — closing with the regulatory, operational, and sustainability framework that governs how systems are permitted and run.
Inside, you will be able to:
- Estimate demand and set a hydraulic design basis, then analyze pipe, pump, and channel flow
- Size and evaluate coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection
- Design wastewater collection, primary, secondary, and nutrient-removal treatment
- Manage sludge and residuals, from digestion and dewatering to water-treatment residuals
- Follow fully worked examples with every step, assumption, and unit conversion visible
- Confirm your method against end-of-chapter practice problems with answers
- Connect each design and operating decision to the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act framework
Quantities appear in United States customary units with SI equivalents, notation follows one master convention throughout, and continuity statements let you trace an assumption from early units to later ones. It works as a sequential course of study and as a fast desk reference alike.
Written for practicing water and wastewater engineers, plant operators, and advanced civil and environmental engineering students. Add this practical, calculation-driven reference to your working library and approach treatment, distribution, collection, and compliance from a single, dependable source.
