Lozano, Jr." on the front board. Lozano's father founded La Opinión on September 16, 1926. Today, Lozano's vision, carried on by his children and grandchildren, has not only made La Opinión the leading Spanish language newspaper in the U.S., but also one of the top 100 daily newspapers in the nation. The Lozano family fled Mexico at the turn of the century. They sought to escape the social injustice and political turmoil that was sweeping through the country at the time and which eventually led to a revolution in Mexico. The family consisted of Lozano, his widowed mother and five sisters. They first settled in San Antonio, Texas, arriving in 1908. Lozano, fueled with a passion for journalism and a mission to establish a truly independent newspaper, founded a daily Spanish language newspaper, La Prensa, in 1913. It was as publisher of La Prensa that he first established a tradition of service to the Latino community. It was a tradition that he would eventually take to Los Angeles. As the Mexican population began to flourish in Los Angeles, Lozano brought his journalistic dedication and skills to this growing community. He founded La Opinión on September 16th to coincide with Mexico's Independence Day. Meanwhile, he continued to oversee management of La Prensa. In 1948, his son, Ignacio E. Lozano Jr., began working at La Opinión. It was in 1953, while on a visit to Los Angeles, that the senior Lozano passed away. Upon his passing, Lozano Jr. assumed the role of Publisher of La Opinión, while his mother, Alicia Elizondo de Lozano, continued on in San Antonio, overseeing La Prensa for another 6 years. La Prensa was sold in 1959, Alicia Lozano moved back to Mexico City and her son Ignacio E. Lozano Jr., remained in Los Angeles as publisher of La Opinión until 1986---20.00.
