She was also a notable author of many books about China. . *** THE NANJING INCIDENT 1927: . Occurred in March 1927 during the capture of Nanjing (then Nanking) by the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) in their Northern Expedition. Foreign warships bombarded the city to defend foreign residents against rioting and looting. Several ships were involved in the engagement, including vessels of the Royal Navy and the United States Navy. Marines and sailors were also landed for rescue operations. Both Nationalist and Communist soldiers within the NRA participated in the rioting and looting of foreign-owned property in Nanjing. . The focus of this book describes the Nationalist assault on Nanking and the experiences of Europeans and Americans living in the city at the time. This is a graphic memoir of the author's experience during the "Nanking Incident" during spring of 1927 when the National Revolutionary Army and Communist troops took Nanjing from Beiyang warlord Zhang Zong-chang. A result was the killing of the American president of Nanking University. The looted homes and businesses of foreign residents: Americans, British, Japanese and others. Rescue response by the Royal Navy and U.S. Navy cruisers and destroyers fighting off the NRA responded, engaging and driving off the NRA [National Revolutionary Army] soldiers, Chinese rioters by evacuating foreigners including the families of Hobart & Ayscough to Shanghai. She was born Alice Nourse in Lockport, New York. Her most famous book, OIL FOR THE LAMPS OF CHINA, which was made into a film, drew heavily on her experiences as the wife of an American oil executive in China amid the turmoil of the overthrow of the Manchu Dynasty in 1912. . * She first traveled to China in 1908 to visit her sister Mary, who taught at a girl's school in Hangzhou, and returned two years later to take up a post at the same establishment. After marrying Earle Tisdale Hobart, a Standard Oil Company executive, in Tianjin in 1914, she traveled to Manchuria and in 1916 published an article on her experiences at the hands of Manchurian bandits in The Atlantic Monthly.
