A very important association copy of this fascinating book about the great Hollywood comedian of the early motion pictures. Book was later made into a movie of the same title. This copy INSCRIBED TO WILL FOWLER by Carlotta Monti. Will Fowler was the son of Los Angeles writer Gene Fowler, a close friend and intimate of W. C. Fields. When Will Fowler was still a boy he was introduced to W.C. Fields and Gene Fowler's other great drinking buddy John Barrymore. Fields took a liking to young Will Fowler, and allowed the youngster to address him as Uncle Claude even though Fields hated his middle name. Reputedly Will Fowler smoked his first cigar with Fields at age 13. Thus, this copy inscribed by the mistress of Fields to Will Fowler is a great piece of association. Later, Will Fowler made a name for himself in his own right as the first newspaper reporter on the scene of the Black Dahlia murder in Los Angeles. Mr. Fowler passed away in April of 2004, and this book came from his estate. The inscription on front blank endpaper reads, "To Will Fowler with love and the greatest admiration. Sincerely, Carlotta Monti. The inscription is dated 1971. The book was very well kept by Mr. Fowler, and only shows slight signs of use, but unfortunately the acetate clear plastic used to cover the dust jacket had a backing on the white portion of two blue stripes that have affected the dust jacket. One stripe, which is rather faded, shows now across the top of the jacket, and another darker one runs across the jacket at mid-section. Not particularly unsightly, especially on spine, but certainly a condition problem. Jacket could be replaced, but I have kept it with book to preserve this as an item once belonging to an important person in W.C. Fields' life. (On cover of jacket, the blue stripe at mid-section has effect of underlining the words in red "W. C. Fields.") Content of book includes numerous plates of vintage photographs.
