A valuable addition to understanding racing's past. Vukovich uniquely captured America's fancy during a time when the Indy 500 was this country's only truly great race. Killed four years before the first Daytona 500, at a time of Vuky's death simply participating in the Indy 500 was the pinnacle of many driver's careers. Winning the event was the ultimate motorsports achievement. He was well on his way to being the first man to win it for a third consecutive time when he lost his life in a horrid multi-car crash on the backstretch in which he was an innocent victim.
