Small 4to. Hardcover. Pp. 546. In very good condition; leather binding with blind stamped border on cover; raised bands with gilt decoration and title on spine. Gilt fore-edge. Light shelf-wear including wear along the edges and corners lightly bumped; faint scuffs and marks. Pages themselves are clean and unmarked with light foxing. Some corners are lightly folded but no significant marks or creases. Includes 27 full-page engravings and a fold-out map at the back, crisp and untorn. Paul Du Chaillu was a French-American traveler, zoologist, and anthropologist. He became famous in the 1860s as the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy people of central Africa.
