Second Edition, Regnault issue. in contemporary mottled calf, red and green morocco labels lettered and numbered in gilt, flat spines gilt in compartments, all edges red, marbled endpapers, blue silk markers. Three volumes, 8vo (193 x 118 mm), pp. viii, 313, gathering E misbound, with a folding engraved map of Germany (245 x 368 mm); frontispiece portrait of Marie Thérèse and pp. [ii], 297, [3]; frontispiece portrait of Frederic II and pp. [ii], 327, without the two plans and with the portrait of Marie Thérèse in place of Joseph II, the text browned in part, with some scattered foxing, A popular epistolary travelogue purporting to be by a Frenchman travelling in Germany. Written originally in German in epistolary form and published as Briefe eines reisenden Franzosen über Deutschland an seinen Bruder zu Paris, 1783. The present French translation by Pierre Le Tourneur is made from the English version, Travels through Germany, translated by Rev. P.H. Maty and published by Cadell in 1787. This copy includes the folding map and two engraved portraits; however it does not include the two plans and one of portraits is of Marie Thérèse in place of Joseph II. The French version was first published by Buisson in 1787; we can find no other copies with the Regnault imprint. See Quérard VIII, p. 447; this Regnault issue not found in OCLC.…
