The effort of their voyage was to harass the Spaniards. According to the Hill Collection citation, Funnell's "narrative contained much that was disapproved by Captain Dampier, who immediately after published a "Vindication of His Voyage." " That, in turn, prompted John Welbe, midshipman, to publish a tract exposing Dampier's cruel treatment of his crew. This is the publisher's Bibliotheca Australiana # 57. See Hill I, p. 117.
