Six scarce ecclesiastical pamphlets in one volume, bringing together Denison, Maskell, Bennett and Pusey at the height of the Oxford Movement"s controversies over Church authority and sacramental doctrine. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Six separately published ecclesiastical pamphlets bound in one volume. Comprising: 1850 An Appeal to the Clergy and Laity of the Church of England, to Combine for the Defence of the Church, and for the Recovery of Her Rights and Liberties by George Anthony Denison. 1850 A Second Letter on the Present Position of the High Church Party in the Church of England: The Want of Dogmatic Teaching in the Reformed English Church by William Maskell. 1852 A Pastoral Letter to the Parishioners of Frome, in the Diocese of Bath and Wells by William J. E. Bennett. Second edition. 1842 A Letter to His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury, on Some Circumstances Connected with the Present Crisis in the English Church by E. B. Pusey. Second edition. 1843 The Holy Eucharist, a Comfort to the Penitent by E. B. Pusey. First edition. Pusey"s sermon resulted in his suspension from preaching before the University; his 1846 sermon on absolution marked his return to the University pulpit and continued his defence of sacramental teaching. 1846 Entire Absolution of the Penitent by E. B. Pusey. First edition. An illuminating collection of High Church and Tractarian controversial writing. The Denison and Maskell pamphlets belong particularly to the crisis surrounding the Gorham judgment, which intensified High Church concerns over secular interference in questions of doctrine. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards.Externally, smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to calf, more so to spine ends. Light rubbing to boards. Small shelf label to spine. Ink ownership inscriptions to "Entire," "Holy Eucharist," "A Second Letter," "An Appeal," and to half-title of Pastoral Letter. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, if slightly age toned with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge, more prominent to older copies. Very Good.…
