About this Item
Four volumes, octavo: Volume 1: xxvi, 345 pages, includes frontispiece portrait; Volume 2: xvi, 547 pages; Volume 3: xvi, 540 pages; Volume 4: vi, 112 (last blank), [vi], 310 pages (facsimile reproduction). Series: Bollingen Series LXXII (The seventy-second in a series of books sponsored by the Bollingen Foundation). The original cream-colored dust jackets are present for all four volumes, but they show notable wear. There is chipping along the tops of the dust jackets, particularly on volumes 1 and 2, where the wear is most pronounced. The spines of the jackets show some minor discoloration due to age. Despite the wear, the dust jackets are intact, with no major tears. The original slipcase is also present and in good structural condition, showing only light rubbing and wear on the corners. The large title label on the front of the slipcase is clean and well-preserved. The books are in excellent condition internally. The pages are clean, with no signs of foxing, tears, or annotations. The binding of each volume is tight, and the cloth covers under the dust jackets show little to no wear. The blue cloth covers remain bright, with the red title labels on the spines of the books also in excellent condition. This edition represents the first literal translation of Eugene Onegin by Vladimir Nabokov, based on the 1837 edition, the last edition published during Pushkin's lifetime. Volume 1 contains Nabokov's extensive introduction and translation of the poem, while Volumes 2 and 3 are dedicated to his detailed commentary. Volume 4 includes an index and a reduced facsimile reproduction of the 1837 edition. In his commentary, Nabokov provides translations of deleted or altered lines, variant passages from Pushkin's notebooks, fragments from an unfinished continuation titled Onegin's Journey, and the unpublished "Chapter Ten." This set belonged to Richard Gustafson, Professor of Russian, Emeritus, at Barnard College, who was a noted scholar on Leo Tolstoy, Russian religious philosophy, and 19th-century Russian poetry.
