A refrigerator that will not cool. A washing machine that will not drain. A dryer that runs but leaves clothes damp. Before replacing parts or paying for service, find out what the symptoms may be telling you.
The Visual Major Appliance Repair Handbook is a practical home appliance repair and troubleshooting guide for homeowners, DIY beginners, and people learning appliance service. Across 18 chapters and 120 realistic, full-color instructional figures, it explains how major household appliances work, what commonly goes wrong, and how to choose the next safe step.
Inside this book, you will learn how to:
-
Troubleshoot refrigerators and freezers: Investigate cooling problems, frost buildup, door seals, ice makers, water dispensers, and leaks.
-
Understand washing machine faults: Work through filling, draining, spinning, vibration, door-lock, and water-leak problems in top-load and front-load washers.
-
Identify dryer problems: Recognize heating, tumbling, airflow, belt, roller, sensor, and ventilation symptoms in electric and gas dryers.
-
Diagnose dishwasher complaints: Check common causes of poor cleaning, standing water, leaks, interrupted cycles, and drying problems.
-
Assess stove and oven faults: Understand electric cooktops, induction surfaces, oven heating, temperature controls, and the warning signs associated with gas ranges.
-
Use repair tools more confidently: Learn component identification, model-number checks, multimeter basics for safely isolated parts, and replacement-part selection.
-
Make informed repair decisions: Follow safe reassembly and performance checks, plan preventive maintenance, compare repair costs with replacement, and know when to call a qualified technician.
The book also includes practical diagnostic cases, practice questions with explained answers, maintenance guidance, symptom lookup pages, worksheets, and a glossary to help you find and use information when you need it.
Not every breakdown means you need a new appliance. But not every repair belongs in a home workshop. This handbook makes those limits clear, especially for gas systems, refrigerant circuits, and microwave high-voltage components.
Understand the problem. Avoid unnecessary part replacements. Make safer, better-informed decisions about the appliances you use every day.
