Our recognition of cultural phenomena is controlled ability to respond and to understand. The camera is an optical system it has active process and alone it offers no means of evading the need for percep-nsitivity. Therefore, I begin this volume with a discussion of observation, go relate the visual content of photography to the theoretical framework of field ch, and consider finally the technology of the photographer's craft in both still es and movies. Some readers may want to reverse this process, preferring to introduce them- first to technical photographic skills before facing the problem of carrying ;h a field study. This book has been designed to allow such an order of study. readers may find the technical chapters too schematic or even oversimplified. But with the limitation of length I feel both the humanistic and the theoretical prob- of photographic observation are more important than a lengthy handbook on how-do-it photography. Through years of teaching photography to journalists, . and scientists, I have found it negative to allow technique to come between pictographer and the human circumstance of involvement, observational refine- and selectivity. Rarely have I found a lack of technical skill to be a serious in in any of these three fields of photography. Yet many times I have found scination of possessing a complex camera and the mystique of technical para- nalia a critical block to making significant camera records.
