Over seventy photographs, many by Penroses' wife Lee Miller, illustrate the colourful cast of characters, including Dora Maar, Francoise Gilot, Jean Cocteau and Georges Braque, as well as artworks and events described.

Elizabeth Cowling is currently Reader in History of Art at Edinburgh University. Her book Picasso: Style and Meaning won the 2003 British Academy Book Award.
