Item description from seller

Third edition of this highly successful aquatint travelogue of a trip through France at the height of the Grand Tour. The first edition was published in 1818, and "whether through the gothic fascination of his visit to this macabre place, or the excellent colour plates, this went through at least four editions quickly", the later editions as "clear and attractive as the first" (Franklin, p. 95). For the first: Abbey Travel 86; Hardie 313; Tooley 212. Colin Franklin, Themes in Aquatint, 1978. Large octavo (263 x 176 mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and 11 similar plates, together with 2 engraved and one etched plate, all after drawings by the author. Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, spine lettered and decorated with floral motifs in gilt, gilt foliate frame to boards, turn-ins gilt, grey coated endpapers, edges gilt. Near-contemporary gift inscription to frontispiece verso. Spine faded, gilt lightly rubbed, small bumps to corners, inner hinges cracked but holding, a few gatherings proud. A very good copy.…
