In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to corners, end bands and cloth. Joints nearly perished with wear along spine and cracking. Tail piece is peeling away from spine, nearly dislodged. Gift of Frederick Clarke Withers dated Feb. 22nd 1864 to a Frost . His signature is on the fly leaf. No. 1509 is written in old hand on the pastedown. Interior lightly toned with scattered foxing. A few instances of age-staining throughout the text. Free of known markings. Binding fragile but intact. Please see photos. Important ownership of Frederick Clarke Withers (1828-1901) who was a successful English architect in America, especially renowned for his Gothic Revival ecclesiastical designs. He partnered with Calvert Vaux; both worked in the office of Andrew Jackson Downing in Newburgh, New York, where they began their careers following Downing s accidental death. Withers greatly participated in the introduction of the High Victorian Gothic style to the United States. Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) was best known for being the co-designer, along with his protege and junior partner Frederick Law Olmsted, of what would become New York s Central Park!.
