Item description from seller

(22 x 18 inches). [4] Dedication and Preface, vi, 10, [2] List of Subscribers pp. Illustrated with a lithographic title and 20 tinted lithographic plates after Morison. Within the original half morocco and cloth gilt-stamped portfolio, expertly refurbished, and a custom green cloth clamshell box A rare hand-coloured portfolio issue of Morison's views of the palaces and hunting seats of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the dynastic landscape of Prince Albert's German homeland. Morison's Views of the Ducal Palaces and Hunting Seats of Saxe Coburg and Gotha records the residences, castles, parks, and hunting seats associated with the ducal house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, only a few years after the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Published in London in 1846, the work translated a German princely landscape into a British luxury publication, appealing to contemporary interest in Albert's origins and in the architectural and picturesque settings of the Coburg-Gotha court. The plates depict the principal ducal sites, including Veste Coburg, Schloss Ehrenburg, Schloss Rosenau, Callenberg, Friedenstein at Gotha, Friedrichsthal, Reinhardsbrunn, Friedrichswerth, Molsdorf, Tenneberg, and Wachsenburg. Several plates include multiple views, giving the series a topographical as well as architectural character. The result is a visual survey of castles, country houses, hunting lodges, gardens, and forested estates, presented through the refined medium of tinted and hand-coloured lithography. Schloss Rosenau gives the work particular resonance. The country residence near Coburg was Prince Albert's birthplace and became one of the key sites through which British audiences imagined his German childhood and dynastic identity. Morison's wider sequence places Rosenau among the network of residences and seats that defined the cultural and territorial world of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Douglas Morison was a British artist who worked in both England and Germany, producing views of royal and aristocratic residences, including subjects connected with Victoria and Albert. The lithographs were printed by Hullmandel & Walton, among the leading London lithographic printers of the period. Morgan records that the work was published in both uncoloured and hand-coloured forms, with the hand-coloured issue trimmed, mounted, and published in portfolio form, as here. Abbey, Travel, 121. Thieme-Becker XXV, 156. Tooley 335.…
