Item description from seller

A teaching anthology of nineteenth and early twentieth-century British verse, aimed at American college and advanced high-school courses. Stephens (the Irish poet-novelist) is lead editor; Beck and Snow were Ohio State English faculty. It is a period survey text/anthology, not a critical monograph. It was a standard American Book Company college poetry set for decades and is now a used-book / library item rather than a current classroom standard. POETS INCLUDED ARE:Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, Robert Bridges, Emily Bronte, Thomas Edward Brown, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Arthur Hugh Clough, John Davidson, Henry Austin Dobson, Ernest Dowson, Edward FitzGerald, Thomas Hardy, William Ernest Henley, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Alfred Edward Housman, Lionel Pigot Johnson, Rudyard Kipling, George Meredith, William Morris, Arthur William Edgar O'Shaughnessy, Coventry kersey Dighton Patmore, Christina Georgina Rossetti, William Sharp [Fiona Macleod], Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Symons, Francis Thompson, James Thomson, Oscar Wilde, and William Butler Yeats. ABOUT THIS COPY: Bound in denim blue cloth with off-white lettering on the cover and spine. Printed on thin India paper. Dual columned. The book gives substantial selections rather than snippets, with introductory notes, bibliographies and notes, and an index of authors, titles, and first lines. Indexed. xlii, 1380 pp. CONDITION: Moderate shelfware. Underlining and annotation occasionally throughout with some foxing and discoloration (particularly within endpapers). Previous owner's name on the front pastedown. There is a crack at the gutter between pages 1348 and 1349, yet hinges are strong and binding is solid with no loose pages. A solid copy. Full refund if not satisfied.

Store description

Since 2005, Shelley and Son Books has been passionate about books, and preserving their importance for current and future generations. We believe that virtue and beauty have a close relationship. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology. But you'll also find works across the centuries, first editions, signed copies, and even modern books, too, across a broad selection of categories and genres. Customer service is of utmost importance to us, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. We assure our clients books of quality, as each copy is carefully graded and shipped with care. Located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we can be found on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, (just south of Asheville). We are primarily an online bookstore, but we invite you to make an appointment for an on-site visit! Shelley and Son Books is owned by Stan Shelley.
