Add to basketBook size - 7 x 4.5 inches, pp. 74 + 2 (blank), leather bound limp cover. Book condition - Good ; contents sound but well used with preliminaries soiled , the majority of pages are clean or just lightly marked but in several places the pages are extensively marked with spots and stains (presumably from being their being popular recipes and 'enthusiastic ' preparation ) , inside the front cover are two inscriptions - " Mrs Kilburn, Southwood Lane, Highgate 1852" , and " Mrs J. Wyndham 1883 ", the inner hinges have been reinforced with Japanese paper, bindnig firm ; leather binding with a recent calf spine-strip repair ; front and back covers with edges quite rubbed and worn, back with a calf leather repair at the bottom front corner, back cover is somewhat marked, consistent with age and use, but still of sound appearance, the spine piece is complete and very sound, the front is in similar condition to the back and has a small area of loss at the bottom front corner. Please see the photos for indications of condition and contents. The first two pages contain a numbered index of the recipes. The index goes up to 49 but pages 50 onwards also contain recipes which indiicates that a third index page is missing. The complete book is written in a hand which appears to be that of the first owner of the book, Mrs Kilburn. Some of the recipes conclude with names of people who provided the recipe , eg. a recipe for Rhubarb Jam ends with "Mrs Hooke''s and Cousin Betty's ". The cookery recipes end on page 59 (page 60 is blank) and from 61 onwards the recipes are for household or medical matters , eg " Food for Poultry", "Black Salve for Boils". The ' author's ' address is given as Southwood Lane, Highgate : at the time this book was written Highgate was a distinct village outside London, though is now a suburban area of north London (aswell as one of the most expensive suburbs in which to live), and Southwood Lane sits between Highgate Wood and Hampstead Heath.
