Understanding and explaining are considered in the social and cultural sciences as the two basic methodological approaches to open up the phenomenal area of the social. How these ways of access are to be determined for themselves and in their relationship to each other is of course controversial until the present. In addition to the value judgment dispute and the positi-vism dispute, the understanding-explanation controversy belongs to the great self-understanding debates of the social and cultural sciences. However, a systematic inventory that sees the different conceptualisations of understanding and explaining is missing. Many of the relevant positions are therefore no longer present in the recent methodological discussion and hardly known in their details. Here the present book tries to remedy this. Probably for the first time, 22 positions, mainly from sociology, but also from ethnology and socio- and cultural science-relevant philosophy, are presented and analysed. The spect rum of the treated concepts ranges from the classics to current approaches.
