What makes a vehicle stop safely and consistently? Why can brake performance change with temperature, load, road conditions, or repeated hard braking? Vehicle Braking Technology provides a practical guide to the engineering, operation, and maintenance of modern vehicle braking systems.
The book begins with the fundamentals of braking, including friction, kinetic energy, heat generation, stopping distance, and hydraulic force. It then examines the major components and technologies used to convert pedal input into controlled deceleration.
Inside, you'll learn about:
- Brake system fundamentals, hydraulic pressure, force multiplication, and braking dynamics
- Disc and drum brakes, calipers, rotors, drums, pads, shoes, and friction materials
- Brake fluid, hydraulic circuits, master cylinders, boosters, and proportioning systems
- ABS, traction control, and electronic stability control and how they regulate wheel behavior
- Common brake problems involving noise, vibration, pulling, reduced performance, and warning lights
- Practical approaches to inspection, diagnosis, pad and rotor replacement, caliper servicing, and fluid maintenance
- Brake-by-wire systems and the changing architecture of modern vehicles
- Regenerative braking and how braking systems operate in hybrid and electric vehicles
- Emerging developments such as predictive maintenance and advanced friction materials
Rather than presenting isolated definitions, this guide explains how braking components interact and why their condition directly affects vehicle performance and safety. You'll gain a clearer understanding of what happens when you press the brake pedal, how braking forces are managed, and how faults can be identified through systematic diagnosis.
Whether you're a student developing automotive knowledge, a vehicle enthusiast seeking a deeper understanding of braking systems, or a technician looking to strengthen practical diagnostic skills, this book provides a structured foundation that connects engineering principles with real vehicle applications.
Build a stronger understanding of the technology responsible for one of the most important functions of any vehicle: bringing it to a controlled and reliable stop.
