EXCERPT: Introduction to schmoozing
What does schmoozing sound like to you? It probably sounds smug, unctuous, icky, oily, slimy - it sounds, quite frankly, like 'oozing.' Although that's an unfortunate negative connotation that schmoozing has, 'oozing' actually well describes what a schmoozer does. A schmoozer is pervasive in his contacts; a schmoozer slides into opportunities where none are apparent; a schmoozer moves stealthily, silently, but inexorably toward a goal by tapping into a wellspring of a personal support structure. Put simply, schmoozers have hundreds of people out there who think they're their second best friend, or at least find themselves happily compelled to act as if they are.
At the same time, schmoozing doesn't deserve its negative rap. Conventional networking - the hero of a hundred other career advice books - should strike rational people as much more distasteful than schmoozing. Conventional networking involves cold-calling friends of friends and friends of relatives and relatives of friends and sweating and stuttering through embarrassing, seemingly endless iterations of "I was referred to you by." Conventional networking is a science, with a painful step-by-step process that essentially involves asking for favor after favor. Schmoozing is more an art, a state of mind or existence: Once begun, schmoozing is not a task, but virtually sport. More importantly schmoozing isn't about asking for favors. Although favors are eventually granted to, traded by, or simply appear for the schmoozer, at the core, schmoozing is about developing a support system.
This book is about schmoozing toward professional success. We'll tell you how to create that schmoozer's support system. We'll tell you how to schmooze your boss at the water cooler. We'll tell you how to schmooze on the phone. We'll even tell you what kinds of gadgets modern technology has kindly created that make life easy for the schmoozer. Along the way, you'll hear tales of schmoozing success - stories told by the rich and famous to stories told by ordinary Joes and Janes.
