Print on Demand. This book is an extended essay from the first volume of the author's magnum opus, and it discusses the artist's role in society and the artist's approach to life. Beginning with a discussion of the proper role of the poet, the author widens his scope to discuss ethical and aesthetic questions in light of his initial discussion. The author asserts the poet's (and thus the artist's) responsibility to manifest truth and beauty in his work. He continues on to discuss the artist's special role in times of societal upheaval and redefines the relationship between the artist and the masses. The author concludes with a discussion of the nature of art itself, the nature of creativity, and the nature of beauty, concluding that the artist and the non-artist must both strive for the beautiful. This book is a challenging and thought-provoking work by a master essayist of the Victorian era and will be appreciated by readers interested in the aesthetics of literature in particular and philosophy in general. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
