“If we are wrong, it is one night, and I will answer for one night.”
— written on the roll in the abbot’s own hand, the night the bells stopped
For four hundred years, the brothers of the spire rang the hours by hand: every office, every day, without a single break. Then, in one hard winter, something came up the valley road, and the house fell silent so as not to be found.
It worked. Nothing found them.
And the bells never rang again.
Four centuries later, the spire still stands above the valley of the Ossen in perfect repair. Twenty floors. Sixty bells. Every window dark. The valley says the brothers failed one night and have been ashamed ever since.
The valley is wrong.
Now three strangers begin the climb:
- Ivo, a bellfounder’s son, whose mother kept time by hours she could only guess at, and died at one she believed was right and almost certainly wasn’t.
- Vasil, a soldier who has climbed these stairs before, and watched the bravest woman he knew stand still on the fourth floor and die of it.
- Fenn, a young archer who has arranged his whole life so that nothing he kills ever comes within twenty feet of him.
Every bell they ring lights the dark for good, and wakes everything still standing in it. To free one of the dead, you have to face it with your hands at your sides for six seconds and trust that you’ve judged the moment right.
And somewhere far above them, something is still keeping time.
What waits in the spire is not evil. It has only been waiting four hundred years for someone to tell it the night is over.
A haunting novel of duty, mercy, and the courage it takes to begin again.
The Valley Where the Bells Stopped is a novel of ANGELUS, the dark fantasy world of the action RPG and original soundtrack by the same author, and can be read entirely on its own.
