xxxvi,436pp. Half title. Contemporary speckled stiff paper wrappers, backed with modern paper. Wrappers soiled and edgeworn. Repair in fore-edge of half title. An occasional bit of light foxing and soiling, but generally clean internally and with wide margins. About very good. Presumably the second French edition, following a Paris printing of the same year, and taken from the third English edition, considered the best textually. Carver went farther west than any explorer of the Northwest before the Revolution, and although he failed in his aim to find the mythical Northwest Passage, he added considerably to geographical knowledge. He also acted as a catalyst to the later explorations of Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark, and his narrative is in many ways a starting point in the literature of western exploration. Pages 310-320 contain glossaries of French-Ojibwa and French-Dakota words. The text contains the first mention of the word "Oregon."
