Item description from seller

A scarce religious tract emphasizing the moral imperatives for evangelistic missionary work, penned by an important missionary and educator in Hawaii and aimed at an American audience. Dibble was a missionary and instructor at the Lahainaluna seminary, where he became an instrumental figure in early Hawaiian education and printing. He is best known for writing the first full-scale history of the Hawaiian Islands, which was also printed on the Lahainaluna Mission seminary's small press the year prior to this more personal work. Dibble printed and paid for this text himself, and it was issued partially by subscription. Out of 600 copies, about 150 went to subscribers in Hawaii, and the rest were sent to the States. An uncommon piece of early Hawaiian printing, particularly in its original patterned cloth binding. FORBES 1460. HUNNEWELL, p.35. xi,[1],132pp. 12mo. Original half green sheep and floral-patterned cloth, spine gilt. Cloth scraped, worn at spine ends. Lacking front free endpaper. Scattered foxing, some leaves tanned. Very good. Partially unopened.…
