An eye that looks simply “red” may be the first sign of a much more serious problem. A patient with a painful eye, abnormal pupil, sudden vision loss, or changes in the appearance of the fundus requires more than a quick impression. The difference between a correct diagnosis and a confident guess often begins with a careful, systematic examination.
This book takes the reader through that process step by step, following the way ophthalmic cases are actually approached in practice: history, examination, diagnostic reasoning, diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate referral when necessary. Rather than presenting isolated lists of diseases, it explains how clinical findings fit together and how to distinguish conditions that can appear deceptively similar.
Inside, you will find practical guidance on eyelid and adnexal disorders, conjunctival and corneal disease, lens and uveal disorders, glaucoma, retinal and optic nerve disease, orbital conditions, and ocular emergencies, along with important species-specific considerations for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, horses, cattle, sheep and goats, and swine.
The book also emphasizes an important reality of clinical practice: the eye can provide valuable clues about disease elsewhere in the body. Ocular findings may be the first indication of systemic infection, neoplasia, hypertension, renal disease, endocrine disorders, or other underlying conditions.
Designed to function both as a learning resource and a clinical reference, the chapters can be read from beginning to end or consulted individually when a particular case presents itself. Clinical Pearls, diagnostic illustrations, practical examination guidance, and self-assessment questions reinforce the material and make it easier to apply at the clinic.
Most importantly, Veterinary Ophthalmology Made Easy is built around a simple principle: good ophthalmology begins with knowing what to look for, knowing how to examine the patient, and knowing what the findings mean.
For the veterinarian who wants to approach ocular cases with greater confidence, greater consistency, and better clinical judgment, this book provides a practical place to begin.
