[EN] 2 volumes in quarto, bound in one of 20.8x15.8 cm. [iv], 182, [i]; [ii], 239 pages. Contemporary full calf binding, with labels and gilt iron tools. With the royal coat of arms of King John VI in the center of the title page. The preliminary sheets of the first volume contain a Latin quotation from Psalm 93 and the author s prologue, the back of the cover sheet of the second volume contains a quotation from the Book of Wisdom, the final sheets of each volume include detailed indexes of the contents of each letter. Rare and important work to study the fundamentals of the debate of ideas that took place throughout Europe from the Age of Enlightenment and that gave rise to major political and social transformations during the nineteenth century, especially in Portugal with the definitive implementation of the Liberal Regime. Published during the period of the struggles for the implementation of the Liberal Regime. In it the author defends religion from the attacks of the most extreme liberals, who denied religion any value to human life and who defended materialism and a narrow rationalism that did not accept the value of Divine Revelation. Throughout the letters Henrique José de Castro condemns: "the indifference, and contempt, with which these modern Innovators betray the word - Faith", condemns the fact that the Liberal Constitution depart from a Divine inspiration, and exposes to a friend the truths of the Christian religion according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church.
