They lose it slowly.
Through standard tasks that were never really standard.
Through KPI deductions that seem too small to worry about.
Through traffic management changes, digital sign-off delays, and defects that come back months later.
Individually, each issue looks minor. Together, they quietly drain the margin from an otherwise busy, productive framework.
This guide breaks down the ten most common contract traps found across water, power, gas, and fibre programmes. It is written in plain English, with real-world examples, practical advice, and simple systems you can use immediately.
Inside, you will learn:
- Why “standard” tasks often cost more than they pay
- How SOR rates lose money when productivity drops
- Where KPI deductions really come from
- How streetworks overruns and TM back-charges hit your margin
- Why digital sign-off delays choke your cashflow
- How retention and defect periods quietly lock up your money
It is a straight-talking, experience-led guide for subcontractors who want to keep more of what they earn.
If you work on utility frameworks, this book will help you spot the traps early, protect your margin, and run the commercial side of the job with confidence.
