Softcover without dust jacket. Mild rubbing noted to glossy covers. Pages clean and bright. Kurz, a young and idealistic Swiss artist, came to the United States to study and paint American Indians. Kelly has preserved Kurz's style but included only those protions of greatest interest tot readers today: his lively and detailed observations of people and activitites at the forst. The journal captures a critical period in western history: as the fur-trade industry reached its peaak of influence, devastating changes on the northern plains compelled Indians to relinquish their resources and independence.
