"Shocking" "profane" and "funny" have all been words used to describe the work of artist John Evans, a prolific painter of extreme, subversive images. Evans was born and raised in the Bay Area and studied at UCLA in the early 1990s, and settled in Los Angeles thereafter to pursue art. Unable to afford live models to pose for him, Evans collected magazines-- including hardcore pornography and fetish magazines-- to supply figures to inspire his paintings. His resulting work catapults the viewer into his darkly humorous and sensual vision. With the context of porn as heavy inspiration, as well as themes of isolation, existentialism, sexual politics and violence, Evans' work unsettles some while providing comfort for others from their own alienation. It even facilitates conversation on all that is unsaid in regards to the seedier aspects of sexuality and society. At first glance, Evans' figures seem childlike, but upon closer look are meticulously detailed and colorful (some would say, obsessive). Evans has attracted a cult following, including Hollywood actor Benicio Del Toro, who is a close collaborator and wrote the foreword for Evans' first book, My Missing Dissertation. This print is part of an extensive collection of extremely rare photo reproductions of the artist's work, from the Speakeasy Gallery Collection. "Untitled (Love At First Sight)" is printed on high gloss photo paper, 8.5" x 11" in size and comes unframed. There is a faint smudge on top of the print towards the left side.
