As drafted: "Dear Col Roosevelt: I am writing to say that I am pretty pleased at the prospect of your being nominated at Chicago as the Candidate of both the Progressive and Republican parties for President. The country needs you and your patriotic services. For sometime past here and in the Philadelphia Tribune, for which I do editorial work, and with the many influential persons of ours I meet from all parts of the country, I have been doing what I could to create sentiment favorable to your nomination and shall continue to do so. I was talking with a Texas visitor yesterday, Chairman of the State Republican League, who said that there would be eleven colored Republican delegates from Texas, and that they were favorable to you but were afraid of Cecil Lyon and that he would not deal fairly with them after the election. Assuring you I shall be pleased to help in any way possible and that I have recovered from the effects of my long drawn out nervous troubles, and with sentiments of high regard. Yours sincerely." We don't know if some version of this the letter was sent to Roosevelt. The potential alliance between the Republicans and Progressives broke down. Roosevelt polled 6th on the first ballot at the Republican Convention which selected Charles Evans Hughes on the third ballot. The Progressive Party offered their nomination to Roosevelt but he declined in favor of endorsing Hughes, Slaughter kept his nervous condition under control well enough to lead the Odd Fellows for several decades.
