First published in 1721, Bailey's dictionary was the lexicon of choice in the 18th century running to 30 editions by 1802. A successor to John Kersey's lexicography, Bailey continued the movement away from 'hard words' and towards a more extensive coverage of the English language inclusive of more common words.
