Kynnersley & later armorial bookplate of Thomas Sneyd Kynnersley on leading pastedown. Alston V 96; ESTC T87495. First published in 1721, Bailey's dictionary was the lexicon of choice in the eighteenth century, running to 30 editions by 1802. A successor to John Kersey's lexicography, Bailey continued the movement away from 'hard words' and towards a more extensive coverage of the English language inclusive of more common words. Thomas Alfred Sneyd Kynnersley, 1839-74, was born in the West Midlands but moved to New Zealand where he briefly became a member of the New Zealand parliament.
