Contemp. full speckled calf, double ruled gilt borders, raised bands, compartments ruled horizontally in gilt; expert repair to hinges, sl. rubbed. A nice copy in contemporary binding. Alston V 103; ESTC T87501. First published in 1721, Bailey's dictionary was the lexicon of choice in the eighteenth century, running to 30 editions by 1802. A successor to John Kersey's lexicography, Bailey continued the movement away from 'hard words' and towards a more extensive coverage of the English language inclusive of more common words.
