Paperback. The Uninhabited House by Mrs. J. H. Riddell explores River Hall, an eerie and mysterious estate inherited by Miss Helena Elmsdale after the death of her father. Since Miss Elmsdale has not yet reached adulthood, the responsibility of managing the property falls to her aunt, Miss Susannah Blake. Concerned about the financial implications, Miss Blake entrusts the house to her attorneys in the hope of renting it out. However, River Hall has a peculiar and unsettling reputation-every tenant who has taken up residence there has fled in fear shortly after moving in. As the house remains uninhabited, its reputation of being haunted or cursed grows, making it nearly impossible to rent. When one of the tenants once again abandons the property, Mr. Craven begins to suspect that the house holds dark secrets that drive away all who try to live there. Faced with Miss Blake's increasing demands for action, one determined man decides to take it upon himself to stay in River Hall and uncover the truth behind its haunted reputation. As he delves deeper into the mystery, the story unfolds with suspense, supernatural elements, and the gradual revelation of the house's grim history.
