A pleasingly bound set of European copyright editions. Tauchnitz's publications of British writers were produced for English-speaking travellers on the continent, who would often replicate the common route of Grand Tours. While they are sometimes thought of as piracies, they were in fact authorized editions marketed at such travellers. The majority of these books are by Arnold Bennett, who was "a prolific and highly successful author in a wide variety of modes. As essayist, dramatist, occasional travel writer, author of short stories, and, above all, of novels, he profited in most senses of the word from the fact that his career coincided with the pre-eminence of the printed word in cultural life" (ODNB). Together 7 works, small octavo (154 x 110 mm). Contemporary quarter vellum with brown spine labels, cloth sides, edges gilt. Bookplates on front pastedowns, spines slightly browned, a very good set.
