Designed for non-art majors, this text aims to communicate the excitement, relevance, and beauty of art in discussions of the language and elements of art-media, methods, content, composition, style and the purposes of art. "Preliminary Sketches" offer facts preceding each chapter to stimulate interest in the subject matter. "A Closer Look" provides an insight into artist's personalities and features a variety of topics in greater depth. "Compare and Contrast" shows two or more works of art side-by-side focusing on their stylistic and technical similarities and differences. "Facts about Art" are related to the sciences and arts, and the social and political events of the day. "Key terms and Artist's Names" is an end-of-chapter feature higlighting the significant material
