Print on Demand. This book delves into the explorations of the South Platte River Valley in Colorado and Nebraska, focusing on the 'underflow' waters located beneath it. The underflow waters, far from being a static reservoir, are part of a dynamic system, flowing in response to the undulations of the river and its terrain, and feeding the river water in times of reduced flow. Through a series of innovative field experiments, the author uncovers the extent of these underground waters, their quality, and the viability of extracting them for irrigation through wells and pumps. Extensive data on groundwater depths, water flow velocity, and chemical composition is presented, which proves invaluable for anyone planning an irrigation system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Kansas, in which the larger pebbles are usually absent. Moreover, the South Platte sands are fairly free from deposits of quicksand and fine silt.
The presence of the large pebbles in the coarse sands of the South Platte deposits renders this material an excellent water-bearing gravel, especially well adapted for the construction of wells of large capacity. By the use of proper strainers the smaller particles can be removed from the immediate neighborhood of a well, so that the water can be collected through the coarser material that is left. Gravel of this kind was found wherever sought between Sterling and North Platte, and it is believed that there is no considerable area in this part of the valley which is not underlain with similar gravel.
