This anthology is a heartfelt tribute to the pioneers who braved uncharted waters, leaving their homelands to build new lives in the United Kingdom. The second and third generations, deeply rooted in the stories, struggles, and triumphs of their forebears, have come together to craft a collection of poetry that resonates with strength and authenticity.
Within these verses, you'll encounter the vibrant tapestry of Caribbean heritage, from the rhythmic cadences of island dialects to the shared experiences of transition and adaptation. Each poem is a testament to resilience, identity, and the enduement of those of which many who journeyed on the HMT Empire Windrush.
"Under the Mango Tree" delves into the complexities of identity, the yearning for ancestral connections, and the forging of new paths. It captures the essence of unity, community, and the indomitable spirit that courses through the veins of each generation.
Through lyrical verses, these poets transport you to the sun-drenched shores of the Caribbean, the bustling streets of the United Kingdom, and the intimate moments shared beneath the shade of a mango tree. The poems reveal the multilayered experiences of these generations—blending nostalgia, discovery, and the universal quest for belonging.
This anthology isn't just a celebration; it's a bridge connecting the past, present, and future. It's a tribute to those who paved the way and a call to the generations that follow to honour their heritage, uplift their communities, and seize every opportunity for growth and achievement.
"Under the Mango Tree" is more than a collection of poems; it's a testament to the enduring legacy of the Windrush generation and a reflection of the hopes, dreams, and aspirations that continue to flourish in its wake.
As we commemorate 75 years since the arrival of the Windrush, let these poetic voices carry you through history, culture, and the shared human experience. "Under the Mango Tree" is a profound and heartfelt homage to the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of a remarkable generation and those who stand upon their shoulders.
