“What a positive and powerful contribution to our understanding of a much-misunderstood illness. As a bereaved father, I am sure that my son’s struggle with depression was seriously hampered by the scandalous stigma surrounding mental health. Only by being open and honest from childhood can we hope to conquer the cruelty of depression.”
– Mike McCarthy - Media Trainer & former Sky News Bureau Chief & BBC News Presenter, Producer & Reporter
This picture book aims to raise awareness of the impact that depression can have on an individual and their family, in a child-friendly and supportive way. It is aimed at 4-11-year olds and has been inspired and informed by people with lived experience of depression. Through rhyme and engaging illustrations, the book hopes to start a conversation about depression, to help relieve anxieties that children might have about someone close to them who may be living with depression. It is the third book in a best-selling series that aims to help children to understand a range of long-term health conditions, whilst promoting an inclusive and diverse society.
The books are read across schools, community groups and more by the brilliant team at Happy Smiles (www.happysmilestraining.co.uk).
"The content and illustrations in this book are perfect for helping children to understand depression and the effects it can have on their own life and the lives of their loved ones. We need to have this book as part of the PSHE curriculum for all children."
- Sonya Christensen - Child and Adult Psychotherapist and NLP Practitioner/Life Coach
“Speaking, reading, talking about and understanding mental health is so important, as is realising that it is okay to struggle and seek help. Most adult mental health problems start before the age of 14, so this book is fantastic for young people and will certainly help to break down the stigma attached to mental health.”
- Danny Sculthorpe - Mental Health Keynote Speaker
"My Uncle Has Depression is an excellent resource for all children. It highlights the importance of supporting your family, friends and teammates. I would recommend this book to all young people in the community.”
- Steve McCormack - Head of Welfare, Rugby League Cares
"Alex has put something together that will leave a lasting impression on our minds. Depression is such a taboo subject. The book describes the topic well, along with the images that relate well to a child's mind. Simple prose, lucid style and design and creativity at its finest. Thoroughly enjoyed the book."
- Mansi Dholakia - CEO & Founder GMHA. Global Mental Health Ambassador. World Peace Ambassador
