Fourth edition, 1904, of book originally published in 1898. Octavo, pp x, 312 + 6 pages publisher's advertisements at rear. Bound in yellow cloth covered hard boards, black lettering to spine and upper board and with attractive decoration of white lilies to both spine and upper board. Frontispiece portrait from a photograph of Swettenham. Written as 37 "private" letters by the author, many reflecting on his time spent in Malaya and Singapore where he rose through the ranks to become 15th Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1901 to 1904. The book is in Very Good Minus condition, binding tight and square, a little wear and marking to the boards and light spotting inside, mainly to the prelims and title page. An uncommon book even as an early reprint. Seller Inventory # B5895
