Add to basketSet in the fog-shrouded, industrial labyrinth of Windhamshire, *The Aetheric Betrayal* is a sprawling steampunk mystery where cutting-edge machinery and ancient, arcane forces collide. The novel follows Detective Evelyn Hartley-a determined investigator armed with a mechanical cane and a fierce sense of justice-as she becomes embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy following a mysterious theft from Windhamshire's venerable Grand Archive.
In the prologue, the theft of forbidden blueprints sets the stage: an intruder clad in a dark cloak and a brass skull mask uses a strange, energy-charged device to disable the Archive's defenses and steal designs for the Aetheric Resonator. This machine, rumored to manipulate the city's very lifeblood-the aetheric ley lines-carries the potential to reshape or utterly destroy the precarious order of society. The seemingly benign hum of machinery and the rhythmic clatter of cobblestone streets hide a volatile power, one that could destabilize the boundaries between progress and chaos.
As Evelyn embarks on her investigation, the city itself becomes a character-a dark, atmospheric metropolis where gas lamps cast distorted halos on rain-slicked streets, forgotten factories echo with ghostly memories, and hidden sectors of the city pulse with secret energies. In her quest to recover the stolen blueprints and thwart a looming catastrophe, Evelyn encounters enigmatic figures like The Weaver, uncovers clues left in the margins of forbidden texts, and delves into the corrupted hearts of industrial districts teeming with dissidents. Her every step reveals that the theft was not a mere act of vandalism, but part of a larger, more sinister plot orchestrated by the Brotherhood of the Cog-a shadowy collective intent on harnessing aetheric energy to remake society in their own revolutionary image.
The narrative unfolds through a series of escalating acts-from the initial rising threat and descent into the city's dark underbelly, to high-stakes heists in abandoned factories, perilous confrontations amid the whispering corridors of forgotten crypts, and sabotage of key conduits that regulate the unstable ley lines. Amid chaos and conspiracies, Evelyn is forced to confront not only the ruthless operatives of the Brotherhood but also the ancient bindings that hold the city's energy in check. In a culminating act, she is drawn into a desperate, ritualistic attempt to realign the ley lines beneath the Clocktower-a monumental structure whose silent gears once symbolized order and progress, but which now threaten to unleash a destructive power if left unchecked.
At its core, *The Aetheric Betrayal* is as much a mystery as it is a meditation on duality: the tension between technological advancement and the dark, uncontrollable forces it can awaken; between revolution and the collateral damage it leaves in its wake; and between a city's desperate hope for renewal and the ever-present specter of chaos. Ismael S. Rodriguez Jr.-The Bulletproof Poet-infuses his narrative with a blend of noir aesthetics, eldritch horror, and cyberpunk elements, painting a vivid portrait of a society teetering on the edge. The novel not only challenges the limits of reason and industry but also invites readers to question whether the drive for progress comes at too high a cost.
Ultimately, Evelyn's journey is one of sacrifice and resilience-a testament to the indomitable human spirit fighting against forces that refuse to ever let the gears of destiny stop turning.
Ismael S. Rodriguez Jr. is a poet and writer whose work dwells in the space where stillness meets pressure. Shaped by lived experience, movement, and sustained attention to power and survival, his writing blends lyrical witness, surrealism, and contemplative resistance. A U.S. Navy veteran who served during Operation Desert Storm aboard a ship deployed in the Mediterranean, he carries an enduring fascination with authority, machinery, discipline, and moral ambiguity-often approached sideways, with humor and grace.
His work has appeared in Halfway Down the Stairs, The Beatnik Cowboy, Chiron Review, Nebo, Home Planet, Lost Lake Folk Opera, Pensive: A Global Journal of Spirituality & the Arts, Muse Literary Journal, and elsewhere. He is the author of multiple poetry and fiction collections and is currently working toward traditional publication while continuing to explore what survives after spectacle fades.
Rodriguez lives in Florida, where he writes quietly, listens closely, and believes that attention itself can be a radical act.
