12mo. 5.75 x 3.75 inches. 323 + [1] pp. Bound in original brown leather, gilt, rebacked with spine in compartments and raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting maroon title labels, gilt. Age related wear with some foxing of margins, including plates; otherwise a very good copy. Early signature on third free endpaper. Illustrated by 27 plates, including folding map of world as frontispiece. A small educational encyclopaedia, first published in 1811, which appeared in numerous editions, including US, until about 1860. The sections include agriculture, trade and commerce, clothing, navigation, geography, religion and morals, astronomy, mathematics, chemistry, physics and natural history. Among the illustrations are a weaver's loom and spinning machine, a' loco motive steam engine', a steam printing press, a balloon and charming depictions of birds and animals. Written under the pseudonym, David Blair, this is one of the numerous works of radical publisher and vegetarian activist, Sir Richard Phillips (1767-1840).
