JOHN SERGEANT, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and vice-presidential candidate on Henry Clay s 1832 ticket, writes to a committee of three, apparently declining an invitation to run again for vice president, clearing the way for WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON to win the presidency, the shortest presidential term in history. After the election, in which Clay was defeated, the Democratic ticket elected Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. After the election, Sergeant returned to Congress, serving from 1837 to 1841. Sergeant was a strong backer of Clay s American system and the Second Bank of the United States. 1 ¼ pp, 7 7/8 x 9 7/8, ALS, Washington, July 2, 1840, Sergeant writes ahead of the 1840 presidential election. He was a strong opponent of slavery who voted against the Missouri Compromise. William Henry Harrison was elected the ninth president of the United States, serving from March 4 to April 4, 1841, the shortest presidency in U.S. history. Harrison contracted pneumonia during the inaugural. John Tyler became president after Harrison s death.
