Herman Melville's book, "Typee : A Peep at Polynesian Life During a Four Month's Residence in a Valley of the Marquesas" was first published in 1846. The book made the 26 year-old author a minor celebrity. Now considered as a classic of travel and adventure literature, the book was originally met, in part, by critical questions that cast doubt on Melville's truthfulness. Those critics are now lost to history, and Melville remains : the great author that he was, and remains. Said the writer of the Wikipedia article on "Typee" : "[Melville's] narrative expresses a great deal of sympathy for the so-called savages, and even interrogates the use of that word, while focusing the most criticism on European marauders and various missionaries' attempts to evangelize." This edition of "Typee" was issued as a limited edition for Christmas 1962 by The West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, who issued such limited editions as holiday gifts for employees and customers. It's a handsome book, with a black leather spine, light gray, paper-covered boards with a vignette illustration on the front. There are handsome printed end-papers featuring an array of South Sea botanical vignettes. There is also a handsome frontispiece depicting a small open boat filled with whalers attacking a whale. The book lacks the slip-case.
