Add to basketVAN DER LEY. The mill founded at Zandyk, North Holland by Pieter Van der Ley in 1655 was the first important mill in Holland and its papers were destined for domestic use and export to England. The ream wrapper bears the emblem of the Dutch lion and figure of liberty, with the paper denomination 'Super fine fine' and the name Van der Ley, printed in red (a rather light impression) on plain white paper (300 × 407 mm). Later pencil marking '1706', though an identical mark is illustrated in Watermarks 1450-1850 with the estimated date of 1760.C.D.L. The denomination 'Super fine fine' and a lion with crown and sword, boldly printed in black on blue paper (300 × 420 mm). Ream wrappers identified and protected reams of 25 quires of new paper for transport and storage. Usually of rather coarse tinted paper and often bearing a maker's device (which may relate to the paper's watermark) and denomination of the paper type, they were intended to be discarded once the paper was unwrapped. Both examples here retain wide margins which if not representing the full wrapper, at least retaining clear examples of the creases made to wrap around the ream within. [Laurentious, Watermarks 1450-1850 (2023), pp. 14-15 for the Van der Ley sheet.].
